Sanding Before and After – Rebuild 2009

by dyoshida on April 12, 2009

So I had some time over this easter holiday weekend to get some extra bike work done…sanding what fun!

I started in on some of the smaller parts. I managed to finish 1 headset bottom, bridge piece, headset shift arm (polished too!).
Then I decided I had better tackle something a little larger…hmmm, what to do, what to do…panels still need some welding so nope.
Legshields, also need some welding (suffering from the typical splitting at the top where the horncast attaches) so they are out as well.
Hubs………I’m not that motivated today (anyone who enjoys cleaning hubs is a masochist for sure).
Ok gas tank. Bingo.
So I look into my inventory. Two tanks to choose from.

1. The tank from my old green and copper Series three (the one I spent so much time on and then got hit by a car on, doh) or 2. The ‘I’m not sure what it came off of’ item you see in the pics (yes the orange bit)

I would have used the copper one but after all these years the copper plate is peeling  and the thought of trying to strip plating at this time is a bit daunting.

So the orange bit it is. Needless to say I’m a bit skeptical as to how well it’s going to turn out.
I don’t waste any time fiddling about, and attack the lump with the wire wheel.
A fair amount of rust comes off but I’m a bit disappointed. The surface is still lumpy with rust and I’m thinking about how much time it would take if I have to fill all that pitting with spot putty (shudder).
Anyway before I gave up I decided to give it a hit with the sander. I’m in luck! Despite my fears the rest of the crap comes off with a bit of extra elbow grease. (see second pics) Smooth as a baby’s bottom. Nice. Got it primed up (see last pic). Now on to the next piece…Legshields ( I know I said they need welding but I’m running out of bits to prep)

I don’t remember what kind of paint I used last time, but what a pain in the ass to remove! The paint keeps going soft under sanding and just gums up the paper, damn.
Back to the wire wheel. Fantastic, this stuff is so gummie it takes me the better part of two hours to clean 1/4 of one side of the legshields. No way is this acceptable.
Looks like I may have to try some sort of chemical remover (I hate that crap). anyway more later.
Cheers,
Chris.

Colours – 27030

by admin on April 9, 2009

There has been emails going around today by Niall and Chris about finalizing the paint colours and recommendations. There are 3 gasket sets now on order. Good sign.

Chris found an old rally patch from 7+ years ago. Which one could this be.

Priming the frames

by admin on April 6, 2009

We spent the day continuing to sand the large parts such as the frames, leg shields and panels in my back yard. We were able to get the frames sanded and started some panels to get the first coat of primer. We are using a mix of spray primer and some controversial roller techniques. The temperature dropped so that slowing the drying time down a lot.

We moved the stuff in the garage and fired up the propane heater (BBQ) to get some heat going. Not much time left to make it for the Niagara rally. Chris mentioned going skinny, not sure if we are down to that yet. Wost case we delay the effort of one scooter to get at least 2 scooters to Niagara. We will assess over the next few weeks.

Yo, I may have landed an 12 volt electronic ignition system to replace my 6 volt points and condensers. I have to arrange a pick-up from oddball kustoms, believe it or not they had one available. What luck.

Dremel = Barrel porting.

by admin on April 2, 2009

Over the past few days we have been working on some barrel porting.  This involves a dremel with a flex shaft, face mask, and some steady hands.  Basically we take a stock barrel and widen the intake and exhaust ports to get more performance out of the engine, without blowing up.  Please do not try this at home.

More gas means more power right?   We’ll we will get more gas in there by bigger holes right?   See what happens when you get power tools in the wrong hands.  We can take advantage of some indoor engine work when the weather is to cold outside.

I’ll post a few images when we complete the modifications to the barrel.  I’ll do a before and after shot.  We’ll use Chris’ barrel for the before shot…  hee hee.

Wake up get out of bed.

I got a call from the guys this morning, its great weather today so my place was chosen to do body work on the scoots.  They arrived around 11:00 a.m. unloading their frames, leg shields panels and we started around noon in my back yard to start de-greasing (Varsol and paint brush) and sanding.  Chris is lending me what parts that I need, what a great guy.  We have three frames to work on today, panels if we can get to them.  We put in about 5 hours today of de-greasing and sanding.  We found a good use for a BBQ frame from last summer.  I put the BBQ out to the curb end of last summer, but some one came by and gutting the darn thing and left just the frame.  I brought it in the backyard to dismantle it but never got around to it.  Came in usefull today during our makeship backyard body shop.

This year I'll be working on my first full frame.

One house keeping note, I have build out categories for each of the three scooters.  Partially to keep things organized and to let the other guys put some details to their own builds.
